Our Internal Voices

I’ll never forget the first time someone in my family told me I had a round face. A seemingly simple observation by someone I looked up to. I’ll never forget it because I remember that moment every time I see a photo of myself or look in the mirror.

A voice, an observation, that wasn’t mine to begin with, that I hadn’t noticed. I heard it, saw it for myself, believed it to be a bad thing and then held on to it. Ever since it has resurfaced in every photo I take, every hat that I try on, every time I look in the mirror to put makeup on, every time I contour my face to “accentuate” my cheekbones and jaw.

Sound familiar?

Do you have that “thing” about yourself that you always tend to pick apart?

Where did you get that from?

Who/What put it into your head that that “thing” was bad?

Family?
Friend?
Significant Other?
Media?
Health Professional?
Stranger?

That person, has their own issues, insecurities and bias that they’re dealing with, and it was NOT FAIR for them to pass that on to you.

What would it look like if, for a second, you allowed yourself to be ANGRY at that person or entity that made you feel that way when you were younger? What would it look like, if instead of blaming and being angry and disgusted at yourself, you looked at the younger version of you that was hurt and confused and hugged them and told them it was a lie and they were perfect the way they are.

What if, in that moment, that little child looked up at you, and believed you, and let it go. They forgot the comment was ever made and went about with the rest of their day.

How much better would their life be?
How much better would your life have been?
How much better would your life BE, if you let it go?

It’s time to let it go.
