Inattention Blindness

or rather, selective focus.

Watch me take the key learning lesson of this study and apply it to health coaching.

Why don’t we often see what’s right in front of our eyes?

It’s because we choose to focus on what we THINK we’re supposed to be focusing on in the moment, and therefore we push aside or neglect to bring attention to other things that may be happening around us, right in front of our noses.

When it comes to health, we focus SO MUCH on JUST nutrition and fitness, that we don’t see how important all the other things are, and how often it’s the lack thereof those things that affects us the most.

I see this happen all the time. We focus so much of our time (because we believe it’ll make us happier) on things like what and how much we’re eating, what and how much we’re working out that we don’t often see the other areas of our lives that are deserving of so much more energy and attention: relationships, hobbies, career, sleep, stress, etc. Often times, when we lack things like good relationships, sense of community, joy in your career, little sleep, etc., they make the most impact in our lives - not eating perfectly healthy and working out hard every single day.

I’ve said it a million times, and I’ll keep saying it:

Obsessing over food and working out isn’t going to bring you happiness, it’s just going to bring you more stress.

Think of what it is that you’re looking for. What it is you’re trying to feel. Who it is you’re trying to be. Do your actions and habits align with that? Observe in what ways obsessing over your body takes away from your life this week. Sit with that and think about all the things you could have been doing instead.

If you’re looking for a safe space where you can learn how to let go of dieting for good, enjoy food without guilt, and turn exercise into something you love to do rather than something you “have” to do, submit a client application to get in contact with me! I work with clients virtually all over the world helping those who are frustrated with dieting and want to change their relationship with food and themselves.
