2023 Reflecting & Setting Goals

2023 is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.

It feels so cliche to say, “Wow, can you believe it? Where did the time go?” but… It's how I feel. Anyways, I wanted to dedicate this LAST newsletter of the year to the two things a lot of people tend to focus on the most as the year ends and the new one begins:

  1. How you're measuring your 2022 progress.

  2. How you're setting your 2023 goals.

I'm going to try not to make this newsletter too lengthy, because you're all probably on vacation now with your families, enjoying time off from school or work, but I want to leave you with a few loving reminders.

Measuring Your 2022 Progress

Before you start diving into all that you want to do in 2023, make sure you take a moment to reflect on everything you've accomplished and/or gotten through this past year. We get so fixated on where we want to be, who we want to be, how much more we want to do, that we forget to congratulate ourselves on everything we’ve done and show gratitude for all that we have. We live in what we call the “gap” instead of the “gain.” We measure our progress based on where we want to be (gap), as opposed to how far we’ve come (gain). So, take a moment, right now, to congratulate yourself for your accomplishments and the hardships you’ve overcome this past year! No matter what happened this year, good or bad, you're still here and you still learned something. You aren't the same person from a year ago.

Setting Your 2023 Goals

Goal setting in the health and wellness world has historically been tricky. I, myself, have gone back and forth on whether or not I think it helps or hurts most people. Regardless of whether you choose to set some health and wellness goals this year or not, I want to share a few things with you. Let's call them loving reminders.

Your goals don't always have to be qualitative. Some really amazing goals you can't measure in numbers: What can you do now that you couldn't do last year? What has become a habit that last year felt impossible to start? What feels easier compared to last year? How do you feel about yourself compared to last year? What did you learn that you didn't know last year?

Focus on the journey, the experience, more than the goal itself. Don't forget to still live your current life and be grateful for all that you have. Don't do things you absolutely hate, because if you can't sustain your efforts, you won't be able to retain your results. Implement habits that you feel you can do for the rest of your life.

You don't have to be miserable to force yourself to get what you want. “Happiness is not a place you arrive to, it's a state you cultivate.” Remember, you are worthy because you exist. The way you feel about yourself will not change when you hit x amount of lbs because body image isn't physical, it's mental and emotional. You can't hate yourself into loving yourself.

Check your intention your attitude within your approach. Are you doing things from a place of self-love or self-hate? Are you excited about your journey or dreading it already? How we approach anything defines our experience. LET GO of that negative voice inside if your head

Get rid of your “all or nothing” mindset, and adopt a growth mindset. Give yourself a break, sometimes 40% effort is all you have, and that's OK. Progress is almost NEVER linear. There will be ups and there will be downs. Anticipate

Explore. There are many, many different ways to get to where you want to be. Find your path. Have fun with it. Sometimes you'll try things you don't like, that isn't the moment to give up, that's the moment to try another approach or something else that might bring you more joy.
