How We Approach Anything Defines Our Experience.

Our approach defines everything. How we approach anything defines our experience.

I had the pleasure of being a guest on a podcast recently where I was asked what the defining moment in my health and wellness journey was when my relationship with exercise and nutrition changed, and my answer was, “When I changed my approach.”

Let me explain.

My experience changed when my WHY changed.

WHY I exercise.

WHY I eat a balanced diet.

WHY I practice self-care.

Before, my approach to exercising and eating well was purely aesthetic. It was purely in spite of myself. It was because I was scared of looking a certain way. I saw nutrition and exercise as a means to an end. I saw working out as something I “had” to endure. My thoughts about exercise and nutrition were negative, restrictive, and self-deprecating.

Therefore, so was my experience.

Here's the issue, if your experience is negative, restrictive, and self-deprecating, it's not sustainable, nor is it healthy. Do you really want to do what you're currently doing for the rest of your life? Because if you want to maintain your “results” you have to sustain your “efforts,” and that means… forever. So, ask yourself, is this the experience I want for the rest of my life?

This is why I encourage people to change their WHY

If you can change your why to something more positive, caring, and loving, I promise you, how you feel about exercising and eating well WILL improve. If you start shifting your perspective of nutrition and exercise as acts of self-care, everything will change.

Doing things out of fear isn't fun.

Doing things in spite of yourself isn't fun.

Doing things because you “have to” isn't fun.

These approaches make your experiences dull and cumbersome.

So, change your approach.

  • Find ways to exercise that you enjoy and make you feel good.

  • Eat a balance of nutritious and fun foods so you never feel deprived.

  • Get 8 hrs of sleep most nights and some nights stay out creating lasting memories with friends.

  • Show gratitude towards your body for all that it does for you despite how you treat it.

  • Support your body as it ages by strengthening your muscles and conditioning your heart.

This balanced approach makes your experiences more nourishing and joyful.

Do things FOR yourself, not IN SPITE OF.
