Self-Care is Often Very Un-Sexy

What do you think of when you hear the word self-care?

Massages

Manicures

Face Masks

Meditating

Journaling

Candles

Retreats

Self-care has become a really trendy topic.

It’s that thing people do where they massage their face with this weird looking tool and oil…

That really long morning routine all the influencers on Instagram do…

And, although those things are wonderful and feel really good to do, self-care isn’t always sexy, and it doesn’t always feel good in the moment. Self care is often times doing the things you don’t really want to do, in order to 1) take good care of yourself and this one body you have and 2) build a life you don’t regularly feel the need to escape from.

It’s implementing tools like a calendar or a spreadsheet to help you stay organized.

It’s letting go of toxic people.

It’s learning how to budget and understand your finances.

It’s learning how to cook more meals at home.

It’s accepting you’re not okay and reaching out for help.

It’s letting go of the fad diets you keep putting yourself through.

It’s getting your heart pumping through another workout.

It’s going to therapy to deal with past trauma.

It’s closing the computer at 6:00pm and deciding to not work anymore.

It’s being ok with looking at your failures to find lessons.

It’s going on a walk when you feel stressed.

It’s letting go of the idea that you need to lose “the last x lbs.”

It’s replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.

It’s getting off your phone and giving yourself 8 hrs of sleep a night.

It’s deciding to not answer emails before 8:00am.

It’s saying no to someone’s request because you know you can’t take on anymore.

It’s getting off of social media.

It’s making that doctor’s appointment.

It’s realizing that you can’t do it all, and giving yourself a break.

Sometimes self-care is the thing you least want to do, and that’s ok.

Self-care is taking responsibility for your own health and your long-term wellness.

It shouldn’t be used to escape your life, it should be a way to enjoy it more.

Self-care helps you be the hero of your life, not the victim.

You have the choice.

The choice to take little actions of self-care every day, to live a life you’ll fully enjoy.

So, what act of self-care will you take this week?
