Rethinking Your New Year Resolutions
With the New Year a few days away you might be thinking of a new resolution, goals you want to hit this upcoming year, things you want to do and accomplish. If you're like most people, one of those goals may include reaching a specific number on the scale. The first thing you turn towards is a diet you heard about or a quick-fix plan that includes a detox and a rigid workout regimen.
This is your reminder that diets don’t support you.
They’re not going to magically give you the life you want.
I know, I’ve heard it before, hell I’ve even gone through it - we’ve all gone on diets before and they’ve worked and we lost weight and we felt “so much better.” However, and hear me out, IF they worked so well, why do you find yourself back at this point, again, wondering “what went wrong” or “where you went wrong” feeling like a failure. IF you would have stuck it, you’d be in a different place right now. Well, let me ask you, IF diets and strict plans actually worked, then you shouldn’t need to go on another one, right?
How many times have you started a diet or a strict plan with the hopes that it would be your last one?
This is the one you’ll be able to stick to and you’ll have the willpower to finally make it last.
The results will keep you motivated to do it forever. It’ll change your life.
Yet, here you are, again. Feeling motivated, but lost and overwhelmed. Feeling like a failure, like you’ve done something wrong.
Let me tell you something, diets and strict plans are designed to be SHORT-TERM fixes. That’s why the U.S. weight loss market is now worth a record $72 billion dollars. It’s unrealistic to think that you should follow strict guidelines every single day for the rest of your life (unless you have a medical condition in which your livelihood ultimately depends on it). So, here you are, yo-yo’ing in and out of the latest fad.
Look, if you are aren’t focused on developing a way of eating and working out that it easy for YOU to integrate into YOUR life and maintain without feeling restricted or stressed, nothing is ever going to stick for the long term. Completely restricting certain food groups, eating things you don’t like, researching and counting calories after every single meal, partaking in workouts that you don’t feel good about - you’re not going to want to do any of that long term, and why should you, it sucks.
I know, it can be challenging at first to let go of the short-term quick-fixes and shift your mindset to make choices that are nourishing for the long-term. We’ve been conditioned to want things quickly, but if you can’t sustain your efforts you can’t sustain your results. It’ll go as quickly as it came, or it’ll come back as quickly as it left.
What does work you ask? What is sustainable?
Learning the basics of nutrition and how food is here to support you and your life.
Finding ways to exercise that feel good to you - not just physically, but emotionally.
Learning about the importance of sleep and stress relief.
Developing a strong sense of self and self worth.
Getting to the root of your insecurities and what’s holding you back from living the life you want.
Freeing yourself from this rollercoaster of feeling great and then feeling like a failure.
I can’t promise it’ll be super easy, but it’s worth it, and I’m here to help make it a little easier.
