Am I Alone?
I took a little solo getaway this weekend and it was absolutely wonderful. A night alone with myself, a deep tissue massage, a bubble bath, a garden walk, a dinner reservation for one, a day by the pool, meditation, a boxing class, journaling, etc.
I didn’t always enjoy being alone, but in my 20s I realized that if I can’t enjoy my own company, if I can’t sit with my own thoughts, if I’m uncomfortable in my own body, then how can I knowing I’m living the best life for me? How can I know I’m making decisions lined with my own values? How can I look out for my best interest? How can I, show up for others as myself, if I can’t stand to be by myself
“Sometimes you need to be alone, not to be lonely, but to enjoy your free time being yourself.”
If you enjoy your own company…
You most likely have a strong sense of who you really are.
…rather than a low self esteem.
You most likely understand yourself and know how to make yourself feel better.
…rather than waiting for someone to rescue you.
You can do activities on your own.
…rather than waiting for someone to do things with you.
You probably care a little less about what people think.
…rather than always looking for approval.
Sounds nice, but intimidating, huh?
Here are some small steps you can take to improve your most important relationship, the one with yourself (which, I promise, will help in all other facets of life):
Tune In - Journaling is the best way to do this. Learn your triggers, behaviors, thought patterns, likes, dislikes, fears, motives, needs, desires. Hear yourself speak by writing down your thoughts on paper and then reflecting on them. What do you want. Who do you think you are? What drives you? What holds you back? You’re not going to like it all. The point isn’t to like it all. The point is to observe and then accept. Accept and love, and with love, see what you can do to self-improve.
Keep Promises to Yourself - Start small and keep it realistic. I wrote more about this > Click HereTake Yourself on Dates - You can start small. A nail appointment. A coffee. A long walk. To the beach. Then you can do the harder things like a dinner, a movie, an activity, a trip, etc. Your only “don’t” is don’t be on your phone the entire time… Remember you’re enjoying YOUR company, this means no social media or texting/calling people.
Positive Self Affirmations - There is one voice in your head, and that’s ultimately yours. Which means, you have the CHOICE to change the conversation. If you’ve consumed negative perspectives all your life (social media, things adults have said around you, negative friends, etc.) this will be a little harder, but still 100% possible. You wouldn’t want to live with a negative, self-deprecating roommate now would you? Well, you kind of are. Make it your goal, right now, to recognize negative self-talk and try every day, to slowly change it into positive thinking.
Try New Things & Learn - There aren’t many things that are more empowering than trying something new and learning new things. It doesn’t need to be a new language or anything like that, just small things - reading a new book, learning a new skill, trying a new activity. The more you feel like you’re adding to your life and your skillsets, the more diverse and empowered you’ll feel.
Romanticize Your Life - I love this saying, so I say it often. Don’t just “have coffee” in the morning, get yourself a nice ass mug, sit in a comfy space of your house, turn the fireplace on, put some music on, TREAT YOURSELF. Don’t just “do things” in life, DO THEM up. You only get one life, why not act like its straight out of a movie?
“Self-Awareness is the first step towards Self-Acceptance which is a prerequisite to Self-Love.”
Love you.
Hope you learn to love you too.
