5 Questions to Making a Change

The following has been adopted from the book “Awaken the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins (Chapter 3) - A book I recommend reading.

Why do we continue to engage in habits that we know are bad for us?

It’s because they’re familiar, and changing would mean going into the unknown, and sometimes we think that the unknown is more painful than what we’re already experiencing. We’re allowing fear to control us and keep us from taking the actions that could change our lives.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.”

“Most people focus on how to avoid pain and gain pleasure in the short term, and thereby create long-term pain for themselves.”

“In order for change to last, we must link pain to our old behavior and pleasure to our new behavior, and condition it until it’s consistent.”

Do you have an action you know you need to take to improve your wellbeing that you’ve been putting off?

Use the questions below (the PDF also gives an example) to help you gain an understanding of what your pain/pleasure points may be.

  1. Write down the action that you need to take that you’ve been putting off.

  2. Why haven’t you taken action? What pain have you linked to taking this action?

    • Think hard and be honest with yourself.

    • What pain have you associated with change that has held you back from taking action?

  3. Write down all the pleasure you’ve had in the past by indulging in this negative pattern.

    • Understanding what pleasures you’ve been getting from this negative pattern will help you realize what it is you’re truly seeking and can then help you identify other ways you can get the same pleasure.

  4. Write down what it will cost you if you don’t change now.

    • What’s it going to cost you physically, emotionally, spiritually, financially?

    • What’s it going to cost you 2, 4, 10 years from now?

    • What’s it going to cost the people around you? How will it affect your relationships?

    • Think about how all this makes you FEEL. What emotions are coming up for you?

  5. Write down all the pleasures you’ll receive by taking each of these actions right now.

    • Make a big list that gets you excited.

    • What will you gain?

    • How will your life be better?

    • Envision all the positive short and long term possibilities.

Excited to make a change, but not sure what to do next now?
