This Is Why I Don’t Care About Weight
Definition of a Behavior:
"The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others."
Health Behaviors Include:
Including vegetables in your meals.
Eating fruit.
Eating more complex carbs.
Eating more whole grains.
Eating more healthy fats.
Getting enough protein every day.
Drinking at least 64oz of water a day.
Getting at least 8hrs of sleep.
Moving for at least 30min a day.
Going outdoors for at least 15min a day.
Getting regular health check ups.
Not watching TV while you eat.
Engaging in stress-reducing practices.
Not smoking.
Not drinking too much alcohol.
Health Behaviors Don't Include:
Weight
Weight, IS NOT, a behavior.
A behavior is something you get to CHOOSE.
Weight can be INFLUENCED by our behaviors and choices, but it is not a choice.
If your goal is to lose weight, focusing on the weight loss, isn't going to help you lose weight.
It's important to know the difference, because often time, people focus and place so much importance on their weight, and less about their behaviors. The work doesn't matter as much, if they're not losing weight, regardless of all the amazing healthy behaviors they've adopted and how GOOD it makes them feel.
In addition, the amount of power we give to the scale is SCARY.
We let it determine our happiness that day.
We let it determine our actions that day.
We let it determine how we're going to treat ourselves that day.
and for what?
For the hopes that you have a tiny moment of external reassurance.
The most disheartening part is that I see a lot of people feeling great with how they're doing, proud of their efforts, having a good time, feel physically good in their bodies, and they step on the scale because they want a moment of extra (external) reassurance - and it doesn't look the way they wanted/expected, and all that momentum and happiness is lost, just like that. They get frustrated, sad, angry, and feel hopeless and they start to let go of all the healthy behaviors they adopted!
When has it ever helped you?! When has it told you something helpful you DIDN’T already know?
I'll give you a second, I'll be here.
If the answer is: I guess never... then do me a favor, get rid of that scale.
Here are other ways you can tell you're engaging in healthy behaviors that are helping you:
You move your body almost every day
You can lift heavier than before
You can run longer than before
You can do certain things with no pain
You have more energy than you did before
Your blood levels look normal
You get enough sleep most nights and wake up well rested
You can manage your stress better
You physically feel good
You go poop almost every day
You're in a good mood more often than not
You feel good about yourself
You're proud of the things that you're doing
As a health coach and personal trainer, I don't care about your weight, I care about your behaviors, because everyone should engage in healthy behaviors no matter what size they are, because they will have a positive effect on your health, whether or not you lose weight by doing them.
