All of that time you spent focused on what other people think of you or what you think about yourself - you could have been actually building relationships and showing others who you truly are.
Of course, learning to love and accept yourself and improve your relationship with food takes time - but it’s what ultimately will help you make this shift. While you’re in the process of healing though, here’s what you can do to start shifting your focus from yourself, to others:
Observe. Now that you’ve realized that you do this, the first step is to catch yourself doing it in the moment. Observe the thoughts that come up and call them out (in your head of course, lol).
Accept. Leave the judgement behind. Accept that you’re having these thoughts and maybe just make a mental note to confront and question them later. Try not to beat yourself up in the act, but rather notice they’re there, and let them roll by like a cloud.
Transform. Accepting that you have these thoughts, and understanding that they’re not serving you or others around you any good, see if you can focus on the person next to you and get really curious about their life and what they’re talking about. Make it a game to be as focused as you can. Make it your mission to make them feel heard and special.
Show up as your full self. You deserve to be seen for who you really are, not who you are when you’re hiding behind your insecurities.
