How to Hack the Chemicals in Your Body to Start Feeling Happier Today!

Hormones are your body’s natural chemical messengers. Once released by glands into your bloodstream, they act on various organs and tissues to control everything from the way your body functions to how you feel.

We have 4 “feel good” hormones that we can boost to help increase happiness and wellbeing!

Serotonin (Good Mood):

When you feel happy and all seems right with the world, you’re feeling the effects of Serotonin.

  • Spend time outdoors

  • Daily gratitude list practice

  • Sun exposure and/or light therapy

  • Probiotics for gut health

  • Meditate

  • Breathwork

  • Exercise

  • Eating complex carbohydrates

Oxytocin (Love)

The love hormone. Oxytocin can help us bond with loved ones. Oxytocin is released in response to the activation of sensory nerves (like touch).

  • Physical touch (hugging, cuddling, etc.)

  • Acts of kindness

  • Give a compliment

  • Get a massage

  • Yoga

  • Loving-kindness meditations

  • Listen to music

  • Sing with others

Endorphins (Stress & Pain)

The body’s natural pain reliever. Your body releases endorphins in response to pain or stress, but also during other activities such as the ones listed below.

  • Laughing out loud

  • Watch a funny movie or show

  • Acupuncture

  • Good sex

  • Dark chocolate

  • Dance

  • Meditation

Dopamine (Reward)

Dopamine provides an intense feeling of reward. Dopamine is most notably involved in helping us feel pleasure as part of the brain’s reward system. It’s what helps us build habits.

  • Finish a task

  • Bullet journal

  • Quality sleep

  • Celebrate small wins

  • Start a new hobby

  • Exercise

  • Schedule self care

  • Shopping

  • Smelling cookies baking

  • Meditation
