Calorie Counting Is Surprisingly Flawed

  1. Calorie counts can be imprecise

    • Numbers you see on food labels can be lower or higher than indicated - The FDA permits inaccuracies of up to 20%.

  2. How you prepare food changes its calorie load

    • Once food is cooked, or chopped, or blended, the amount of energy available for digestion and absorption changes.

  3. We don’t absorb all the calories the same

    • Our bodies all digest food different depending on our metabolic rate and gut bacteria. Some calories even pass through us undigested.

Counting calories is an EXTERNAL reference we use to control what we put into our bodies when we don’t trust our own bodies to tell us when they’re hungry / not hungry.

The solution: Developing the skills to listen to your body and learn your own internal hunger / fullness cues as well as a basic understanding of nutrition is all you need to eat well.

Bonus: You’ll save SO much time, energy, and mental sanity not having to calculate and input every single little thing, phew.
