What We Can Learn from the “That Girl” Trend on TikTok
If you’re on TikTok, and you’ve been sucked into the “health and wellness” algorithm, you’ve probably seen the “that girl” morning routine trend. “That girl” wakes up at 5 am, puts on her cute matching work-out outfit, makes her bed in her perfectly aesthetic room, has lemon water, makes an adorable cup of coffee, meditates, works out, has a green juice, and then goes to work. Phew. Looks nice, but woah, who's got time for that?
I personally love morning routines. I have one that really helps me, and I cherish it like no other. Tyler still doesn’t quite understand why I’d elect to go to bed early just to keep my morning routine, but iykyk (stands for: if you know you know - I’m trying to stay hip and trendy like the cool kids). I think morning routines have amazing benefits and I honestly can’t recommend them enough. That being said, I can understand why people get thrown off by the idea when they see videos of morning routines that take 1-2 hrs long. For some people, it’s simply not possible.
Let's stop and focus on the most valuable lesson from this trend.
What's the common denominator in all these videos? Time
The people that adopt morning routines, have gifted themselves, time.
Imagine a morning where you had time to yourself before people start asking you for things. Where you didn’t feel rushed and frantic. Where you can eat your food and drink your drink in peace. Imagine a morning that didn’t start with work emails, friends texting you, family calling you, or other people needing your time.
Imagine a morning, to yourself, where you can do whatever you want. The house is quiet. The city outside is quiet (ish). You don’t need to be on your phone or computer. You can just, breathe.
That’s what a morning routine gifts you. It gifts you time.
It doesn’t need to be luxurious.
It doesn’t need to be super long.
It doesn’t need to be filled with a ton of things.
It’s just got to be you, giving yourself your attention before anyone else asks for it.
So, maybe that’s 15 extra min. Maybe that’s 30 extra min. Maybe it’s an hour.
Here are the only rules:
No phone.
No computer.
This is time you are carving out for yourself, no one else, so you can go into your day feeling good. It’s not selfish, it’s self-care. You are putting yourself first, so that you can do the rest, at your best. You’ve got to fill your cup up before you start pouring into others, am I right?
What should you do with all this time?
Well, what would bring you joy? Is there something you’ve been wanting to try or be able to do more of? Is there a new habit you’ve been wanting to implement? For some people it’s the time they meditate. For some people It’s simply being able to make breakfast and coffee and enjoy it. Maybe you’re been wanting to read more, journal, knit, I dunno.
If you like to end your day relaxing and doing whatever you want, imagine what it would feel like to start your day the same.
