This is Why It's Easier to Do "Bad" Habits than "Good" Ones

The reason we do certain habits is because the immediate outcome is favorable:

Let's take eating out every night:

The immediate outcome is favorable:

  • It's quick

  • It tastes good

However, the ultimate outcome, can be unfavorable:

  • High levels of salt and inflammatory fats overtime can increase cholesterol, etc.

  • A lot of money spent.

With other habits it's the reverse.

Let's take working out as an example:

The immediate outcome of a workout isn't too favorable (especially in the beginning):

  • You're sore.

  • You're sweaty.

  • Your body hasn't really changed at all.

However, the ultimate outcome, is really favorable:

  • Your cholesterol lowers.

  • You're less at risk of injury.

  • You're less at risk of disease.

When looking at your health habits, you can identify which ones are serving you by asking yourself one question: “If I continue to do/not do this, what might be my ultimate outcome?

Initially, adopting certain habits can be difficult, until it becomes a part of who you are, which is when you’ll find enjoyment from doing those things because you're fulfilling your identity.
